The relief budget under §45b SGB XI is a statutory benefit of the care insurance. Every insured person with care grade 1 to 5 who is cared for at home is entitled to it. The amount is 131 € per month and can be used for recognized offers for support in everyday life – such as housekeeping, shopping assistance, or companionship.
Important: The relief budget is not a nursing care benefit, but an additional benefit for everyday help. You are entitled to it in addition to other care benefits (such as care allowance or benefits in kind). A separate application is usually not necessary – the entitlement arises automatically with the care grade.
Entitlement & Budget by Care Grade
The §45b relief budget is available to all care grades 1–5. From care grade 2, you can additionally use up to 40% of your care benefits in kind via §45a reassignment — significantly increasing your total budget for everyday support.
| Care Grade | §45b / Month | §45a Reassignment | Total Potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care Grade 1✓ Qualified | 131 € | – | 131 € |
| Care Grade 2 | 131 € | bis 318 € | bis 449 € |
| Care Grade 3 | 131 € | bis 599 € | bis 730 € |
| Care Grade 4 | 131 € | bis 744 € | bis 875 € |
| Care Grade 5 | 131 € | bis 920 € | bis 1051 € |
* §45a: up to 40% of care benefits in kind (§36 SGB XI) may be reassigned for recognized everyday support services.
Requirements
- ✓Care grade 1 to 5 (including care grade 1!)
- ✓Home care (you live at home, not in a nursing home)
- ✓The service must be provided by a recognized provider
- ✓A separate application is usually not necessary
- ✓The entitlement arises automatically with the care grade
Good to know: Saving amounts
Unused relief amounts do not expire immediately. They can be carried over to the following quarter. Amounts from the previous year can still be used until 30. Juni of the following year. This means you can save up to 18 months.
§45a Reassignment: More Budget for Care Grades 2–5
From care grade 2, you are entitled to care benefits in kind under §36 SGB XI. Up to 40% of these may be used for everyday support services (§45a SGB XI) — instead of solely for physical care. This so-called reassignment allows you to significantly increase the budget available for housekeeping, shopping assistance, or companionship.
- ✓The reassignment does not require a separate application — simply talk to us.
- ✓Billing goes directly to your care insurance — no paperwork for you.
- ✓Combining §45b and §45a is possible — for maximum relief.
Example for care grade 3: §45b (131 €) + §45a reassignment (40% of 1,497 € = 599 €) = up to 730 € per month for everyday support.
